  • Category: West Districts/ Historic Monument ,Government agency
  • Address: No. 99, Minquan Rd., West Dist., Taichung City 403419, Taiwan (R.O.C.)

During the Japanese colonial period, the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office reorganized Taiwan’s local administrative divisions in 1920 (the 9th year of the Taisho era), establishing Taichung Prefecture in central Taiwan. The prefecture covered areas that are now Taichung City, Changhua County, and Nantou County. As the seat of the prefectural government, Taichung was home to numerous government institutions and attracted a growing population, making it the political, economic, and cultural center of central Taiwan.

The building features a distinctive corner layout, with its main entrance positioned at the intersection. Its elaborate architectural details and elegant historical style reflect the grandeur of the government offices of the era. The two wings extend toward the rear, creating an imposing and symmetrical appearance.

After World War II, the building was used as the Taichung City Government Office and is now occupied by offices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau. Inspired by the French Mansard style, the building combines clean white walls with nostalgic red brick and intricate decorative details. Inside, the two wings extend outward to form bright and orderly corridors surrounding a central courtyard. The courtyard features a spacious green lawn and tall coconut trees, creating a tranquil setting where visitors can experience a unique sense of stepping back through history.
